Massage Therapy Services Marysville Wa

Many spas and private practices offer massage therapy services. Several studies have demonstrated that massage can be an effective treatment for many pain disorders. Massage can also help people relax, provide pain relief to people who've suffered injury in sports or car accidents and it just plain feels good.

While there are over 150 types of massage techniques used throughout the world, only around 30 of them are frequently seen in clinics and spas. The following list is a compilation of some of the more common types, as well as a few less well-known forms of massage.

Structural Release Therapy

Structural Release, also known as structural relief therapy, is a massage technique designed to help people whose muscles contract involuntarily. It is also used to treat pain and improve range of motion. It can be used in conjunction with deep tissue massage.

The therapist will palpate the client’s body to find the tight, contracted muscles. In addition to massaging the patient, they will also move and rotate their limbs to loosen their muscles. Unlike some techniques that emphasize stretching muscles, SRT concentrates on shortening them. SRT combines osteopathic methods with several different massage techniques to treat chronic muscle problems like whiplash, sciatica, low back pain and a variety of joint problems.

Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

Deep tissue massage is popular with athletes. As the name suggests, deep tissue massage penetrates more deeply into the muscles than do other types. The therapist uses their hands, fingertips, knuckles, forearms or elbows to apply forceful pressure. As a result, deep tissue massage can be painful as the therapist works on tight and knotted muscles. The client may be sore for a day or two after the massage.

Deep tissue massage offers many of the same healthful benefits as the gentler Swedish massage like relaxation and improved circulation. It is however, much more effective at loosening tight muscles and restoring a patient’s mobility. Deep tissue massage can also break up scar tissue, which also helps improve mobility. This type of massage can be used to treat people with conditions that cause chronic pain such as fibromyalgia, carpal tunnel syndrome, and involuntary muscle contraction.

Gua Sha (a Chinese scraping therapy)

Gua Sha is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that can stimulate the immune system. It allows the body to get rid of stagnant fluids and thus improve circulation. A few studies have shown that gua sha can help patients with chronic neck pain.

The practitioner lubricates the skin and then strokes it with a smooth-edged tool with each stroke being about four to six inches long. The strokes may either move along acupuncture pathways or down the muscles. The resultant scrapes allow stagnant fluids to leave the body and be replaced by healthy new cells.

Myofacial Release

In this technique, the therapist concentrates on the fascia, a three-dimensional web of tissue with a variety of functions. The fascia occur in three layers: superficial, deep and visceral. Myofascia are a type of deep fascia, and they are attached to the muscles. Injuries, surgery and stress can all damage the myofascia, and that often takes the form of knots or scar tissue. These knots become trigger points that cause pain – sometimes even when the patient is resting.

In myofascial release, which is sometimes called trigger point therapy, the practitioner works to rid the patient of their trigger points to ease their pain and improve their range of motion. The therapist uses a variety of stretches to release different fascia.

Hot Stone Therapy

As the name implies, hot stone therapy or hot stone massage involves the use of heated stones that are strategically placed on the body to warm and relax the patient’s muscles. The therapist will typically place the stones along the spine, behind the neck, between the toes, in the palms and/or on the forehead.

The therapist will eventually remove the stones and use them to stroke the patient. Afterwards, they will use their hands to massage the client. If the patient has chronically tight muscles, the therapist may use some of the techniques from deep tissue massage during the treatment.

Basalt stones are the type most commonly used in hot stone therapy, for they retain heat longer than other stones.

Lymph Draining

Lymph draining, also called lymphatic drainage or manual lymph drainage, is used to treat patients who have edema caused by defective flow of the lymph. The lymph system serves as the body’s filtration system, and it moves waste materials or lymph to those organs that eventually expel it. The filtration process takes place at the lymph nodes. When a node gets blocked, an edema is the result. Such blockages can be caused by infection, injury, surgery, tumors or scar tissue.

Lymph drainage is a gentle and rhythmic massage technique that improves the circulation of the lymph system, breaks up scar tissue and detoxifies the body. It is also used to promote recovery from many types of surgery.

Table Stretching

Like deep tissue massage, table stretching is popular with athletes, and its main goal is improving flexibility. Unlike other forms of massage, the client is fully clothed, but they wear loose and comfortable clothing to permit a wide range of motion. While the client lies flat on a table, the therapist will carefully move their limbs to stretch their muscles.

Table stretching shares some elements with Thai massage, which is sometimes called “assisted yoga.” In Thai massage, the therapist also stretches the client’s limbs while the client lies on a mat or a table.

Pregnancy or Prenatal Massage

Pregnancy/prenatal massage is a treatment tailored for pregnant women that provides many health benefits and can reduce low back pain, depression, cramps in the legs and feet, and muscle spasms. Getting regular massage treatments during pregnancy can reduce pain during labor and even shorten labor itself by up to 25 percent. Regular massage treatments during pregnancy may also significantly reduce the need for narcotics and epidurals during labor.

During a pregnancy massage, the patient will lay on their side with pillows between their legs and under their head and stomach. The therapist will usually start with the head and work their way down the neck, shoulders, arms, and legs and end with the back.

Relaxation Massage

Relaxation massage is a gentle form of the Swedish massage in which the therapist works on the client’s whole body using very little pressure. It is the most common service provided at spas. While relaxation massage is not used to treat chronic problems like constantly tight muscles, it is used to promote relaxation, ease muscle tension and improve the circulation.

The massage will be given in room with a calming ambience; there may be soft music playing, and the room will have dim lighting that may be provided by candlelight. The client will lie face up, and the therapist will begin by massaging their head, neck and shoulders with long and gentle strokes. Midway through the treatment, the client will be asked to flip over so the therapist can work on their back.

Different massage therapies can be used to treat different conditions, and our medi-spa therefore offers a range of services. Come talk to one of our therapists, and they will help you choose the best massage therapy for your needs.
